Whirlpool Corporation approached Panattoni in 2008 seeking guidance on how to be more sustainable in the development of their distribution facilities. Panattoni had three of these facilities under construction for Whirlpool already in Seattle, Atlanta and Denver . Panattoni recommended LEED as a solution and immediately set out to redesign these facilities. All three buildings ultimately achieved certification with Seattle and Atlanta both going Gold. Atlanta, the bigger of these two also achieved one more point than the Seattle facility.
The Atlanta facility appears to be the largest Warehouse to receive Gold Certification in the U.S. at over 1,500,000 sf The project achieved 41 points and almost all of the points yielded a positive return on investment.
Every light fixture in the warehouse is fitted with a motion sensor
100% concrete paving and a white roof deck to minimize heat island effect
No landscape irrigation required
42% water use reduction
28% recycled content
34% energy reduction
In particular, it is noted some points not relevant to the particular use were not included. For example, the bicycle storage rack point was not included because the location and workforce would not benefit.
